What’s The Next Big Thing in Premodern? | The Old Men Magic Podcast Ep. 53
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
What does an aspiring tournament Spike brew now that Land Tax is gone from Premodern? We discuss a recent Sam Black article examining just that issue. We also continue our streak of covering breaking news a week or more after it broke in our brief review of WOTC's 2024 release schedule. Bloomburrow looks quite promising to me. Let us know what you're exciting about brewing or possibly buying next year.

An Ancestral Recall Every Turn | The Old Men Magic Podcast Ep. 52

Back in the mid 90s we thought Land Tax was a great way to make sure you hit all of your land drops and a low cost mana fixer. Today Alex and I learn about how people with far greater MTG minds turned Land Tax into the greatest card draw engine around, which led to its banning, unbanning, then subsequent rebanning in the Premodern format.

Today we complete our review of Premodern-legal cantrips. If we missed something cool, which I'm sure we did, please let us know in the comments. We also discuss a few old-frame cards that are moving in the market thanks to their interactions with some modern spells. Hope you enjoy.

Premodern Cantrips Part 1. Ice Age to Urza’s | The Old Men Magic Podcast Ep. 50

Today we begin our review of Premodern-legal cantrips. Yes I panicked when I realized that I forgot Brainstorm when we reviewed the Ice Age cantrips. Yes I was later reminded by someone on social media that Brainstorm is not Premodern-legal, which is why I originally left it out of the show notes. So basically I nailed it. Hope you enjoy.

Today we discuss some of the cards that interest us the most from the upcoming Commander Masters set. No allied Fetchlands yet but we finally got those Medallions! We also review Alan Comer's 1997 Turbo Xerox deck which was wellspring of the decks that I always referred to as "those decks with lots of low casting cost blue cantrips or library manipulation spells." I also beg the viewers to help me fill in the last few creature slots of my old-frame green creature horde Commander deck. Hope you enjoy.

Today our One Ring watch segment comes to an end. My Precious is in Canada. We discuss what is known so far (not much). We then look at a couple Fires of Yavimaya decks from the Premodern era that splash some big gold bodies into the more traditional R/G framework. If there is something else out there that you would splash, let us know in the comments. Hope you enjoy.

This week Alex and I join the hunt for The One Ring by blowing our retirement funds on LOTR Collector Booster packs. As listeners of this show already know, I have not opened a booster pack since I purchased two Mercadian Masques boosters from a Barnes and Noble in Boardman, OH in 1999. Those were simpler times. Before multiple art variants. Before surge foils that will burn a man's retina if he views the card at the wrong angle. A time when you could purchase a Mox for a price that will now get you a serialized 69/500 Cannibal Dragonlord. Like my grandpappy used to say...
