The Old Mage MTG Podcast

After Fluctuator reached the top 8 of the Premodern North American Championships at Lobstercon 2023, I was inspired to learn how to build and play the deck. Luckily, others already did all of the hard work for me. Join us as we review a couple recent Premodern Fluctuator builds and try to understand their design. Also, we review the current Secret Lair Spookydrop.
Some of the offerings are quite cool, while others just aren't for me.

I need to get better at building sideboards. In my quest to become the ultimate sideboarder, I am reviewing some of the best color-hosers from the Premodern era, starting with the double-hoser cycle in Tempest. We also discuss some of the new LOTR products being released to spread joy this holiday season. I do love that Hildebrandt art.

On this episode, we painstakingly review all of the slivers printed from Tempest to Scourge and decide which of these creatures will make their way into my first sliver deck. The mana base sure is a b*tch, but I think I'll face the pain and play 5 color slivers because I gotta have that queen.

We are back to discuss not just a cycle, but a M-M-M-MEGA-CYCLE of cards that span Tempest and Exodus. Each creature in the retriever cycle allows you to return a card from your graveyard to your hand when it enters the battlefield. They are cheap and useful, but are there better ways to do what they do? We also discuss Atogatog, which I am considering as a Commander for my next EDH deck. I might have to dip into the Modern card pool for this build.

The people have spoken. Our licid episode was one of most poorly received podcasts we've ever done so we are here to give the people more of what they don't realize they want. Even more licids. We then review some of the reprinted enchantments from Wilds of Eldraine: Enchanting Tales that caught our attention. The art in this set is stunning.

In this episode we discuss our first MTG conference, the Licid cycle from Tempest (no one plays these cards but at least one is going into my current pet Jank deck that I am very excited about) and we review the current Secret Lair Superdrop from WOTC.

In this episode, we discuss the evolution of Miracle Grow during it's earliest days as at it transitioned from a U/G Quirion Dryad deck packed full of merfolk to a tri-colored deck that took full advantage of the threshold mechanic. We also learn about the Land Game, which from what I've gathered, isn't just one game, but is instead a game with rule sets that have varied significantly over time and between play groups.
Much of what I've learned about Miracle Grow so far was gleaned from these articles:
